Minister of Music Needed
St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in the Rancho Peñasquitos neighborhood of San Diego seeks a part-time Minister of Music to facilitate the church’s music program and the musical expression of the worshipping congregation. St. Timothy’s music program utilizes a range of music from traditional Episcopal hymns (from the Hymnal 1982, etc.) to contemporary music from other sources. The music program also includes volunteer musicians and musical instruments including guitars, bass guitars, and percussion. Parish instruments include: Yamaha Claranova, Technics Digital Keyboard, Young Chang grand piano, 3 octave set of Malmark Hand Chimes, and conga drums.
The Minister of Music is less a performer than a teacher and leader of worship, who understands this position as a platform to build up the community through music. The Minister of Music will be responsible for leading regular congregational worship through singing and music and will direct the church choir.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Selects, plays, and leads music for Sunday and Holy Day services, primarily on the church’s Claranova
- Leads regular congregational singing and directs the small choir
- Is familiar with traditional Episcopal music as well as contemporary music to create blended worship music
- Has awareness of the Church calendar and its distinctive liturgical needs Meets with the Rector as needed in addition to regular phone calls and emails
- Submits music plans to the Rector and office staff by bulletin publication deadline Meets regularly with the Worship Committee to plan seasonal worship and other services
- Hires and directs guest musicians for special worship services and events Hires and prepares competent substitute musicians as needed
- Oversees the annual budget for music ministry
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees maintenance of St. Timothy’s musical instruments and music library
- Leads occasional Adult Forum sessions related to music
- Takes training in Safeguarding God’s People & Sexual Harassment; maintain certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Formal or informal training in church music
- Experience and knowledge of the Episcopal liturgical tradition
- Ability to utilize additional instruments, when appropriate (i.e. small percussion instruments, guitar, or orchestral instruments) to augment in-person worship and online worship
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Able to play the piano and other instruments
- Able to speak in a public forum
