Interim Director of Music Ministry
St. Timothy’s is searching for an Interim Director of Music Ministry beginning in November 2024 and ending in January or February of 2025.
Who we are:
St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church is a small well-established and active church community. We have a weekly Eucharistic service with musical accompaniment and a choir that begins at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday, with a typical attendance of around 50, and an average of 100 on main Feast Days. We have a choir of about 12-15 adults. Our instruments include a Conservatory Baby Grand Piano and a Yamaha Clavinova (CSP 150).
Position: Interim Director of Music Ministry
Reports to: The Rev. Cecelia “CC” Schroeder, Rector
Location: 10125 Azuaga Street San Diego, CA 92129
Overall: To coordinate and integrate the music ministry of the parish in a manner that enhances the spirit of worship and assists the congregation in praising and serving God.
Salary: Range of $20,000 to $25,000 annual, commensurate with education and experience, according to the standards of the American Guild of Organists and Association of Anglican Musicians.
Work hours: Approximately 10-15 hours per week.
Duties:
- Collaborate with rector to plan weekly, seasonal, and special liturgies such as weddings and funerals
- Provide music for all liturgies that include music.
- Conduct regular Adult Choir rehearsals as well as practice sessions before choral church services.
- Explore ways of integrating music that spans genres and generations.
- Actively participate in parish life.
- Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated leadership skills in directing and motivating musical participants.
- Instructional competency in teaching music to volunteer singers of all ages and abilities.
- Ability to play organ and piano proficiently and to improvise appropriately as needed at key moments in the service.
- Understanding of liturgy and the role of music in worship services. Familiarity with the Episcopal liturgy is desirable.
- Knowledge of traditional and contemporary choral and keyboard church music.
- Appreciation of a wide range of Christian musical styles and genres, while acknowledging the St. Timothy’s parish culture.
We strive for a music program that will be high quality with a vibrant adult choir. Our program will encourage and support congregational singing, engage the musical talents of the community, and incorporate a range of instruments.
Liturgical Duties
- In collaboration with the Rector and music team, select worship service music, including hymns and anthems, consistent with the lectionary and liturgical season.
- Provide keyboard accompaniment for principal services with musical accompaniments and seasonal liturgies.
- Select, prepare, and play preludes and postludes at services with musical accompaniments.
- Plan seasonal liturgies in cooperation with the Rector.
- Work with parishioners and their families in the selection and performance of music at special liturgies such as weddings and funerals (an honorarium is typically offered by the family).
- Encourage congregational participation in music and teach new music to members in worship. Suggest and invite guest musicians and vocalists in support of special liturgies.
Administrative Duties
- Provide music selections for services at least a month in advance, preferably by Google Sheets, to the church office.
- Proofread the music listings in service bulletins via email.
- Prepare and manage music budget.
- Submit requisitions for all expenditures.
- Participate at bi-weekly in staff meetings. Attend Vestry meetings upon request.
- Maintain and update the office list of substitute organists and pianists.
- Organize and maintain the music library.
- Ensure that the Music Ministry complies with all legal requirements related to the performance of copyright-protected works or music.
- Reserve facilities for special events and rehearsals with the Parish Administrator.
- Maintain membership in relevant professional organizations.
Adult Choir Duties
- Develop the musical skills of Adult Choir members through regular rehearsal, coaching, and other appropriate methods.
- Direct the Adult Choir for any choral service.
- Create a welcoming environment to encourage new members to join.
- Notify rector of members who are absent, ill or in crisis.
- Maintain roster of choir members, including addresses, contact telephone numbers and e-mail addresses, and assigned supplies. Regularly share a copy with the Parish Administrator.

Pay: $20,000.00 – $25,000.00 per year
